Description of Project:
The University obtained a grant from Dementia Platform UK to provide a new SIGNA PET-MR Scanner suite - the first of its kind in the North West of England to further research into dementia.
An existing shelled area within the new hospital was identified on the ground floor and this in itself created a number of challenges.
The existing floor slab had to be cut out and replaced due to the weight of the scanner and this was done by cutting the existing slab into small squares and lifted out in sections using a specialist suction machine to alleviate noise and disruption to ophthalmic operating theatres above.
Having a machine that combines both MR and PET required 2 different approaches for protection combining radiation and RF proof construction including lead lining and waveguides to penetrations.
Every aspect of the project was designed to assist dementia patients in orientating the facilities from contrast flooring leading to the treatment rooms which were individually colour coded and accentuating the leading door edges and vision panels.
Works commenced on site in May 2016 and the suite was completed with scanner in place on September 2016
